Steel Estimator

Donner Steel Works - Lincoln, NE

Reports to: President

Starting Pay Based on Experience


Summary:

The Steel Estimator will stay up to date on the changing industry of the steel market and be able to interpret the steel drawings to Identify, list, and price all steel items to be fabricated from architectural and structural design documents.


Essential Functions Include but Are Not Limited To:

  • Identify structural, architectural, and miscellaneous steel items from contract documents (plans, addenda, and specs).
  • Mult, nest, and price materials identified.
  • Track and update material costs changes as needed for estimates.
  • Provide breakdowns of weights, piece counts, lineal ft, etc. from take-off to Lead Estimator.
  • Price and compare specialty-supplied bid items in adequate time prior to the bid date.
  • Maintain contact with trucking companies to be sure we bidding accurate shipping costs.
  • Assist Project Managers and Office Managers in creating budgets for awarded projects.
  • Complete all steps of the project management checklist upon receiving a new job.
  • Participate in team meetings on new projects awarded.
  • Work with the Lead Estimator to update the bid calendar and planning of bids.
  • Order/print drawings for Estimators.
  • Track, print, and post all necessary addenda information to bidding documents prior to the bid date.
  • Print and email scopes and quotes.
  • Help build, update, and maintain the estimating manual.
  • Participate in team meetings on new projects awarded.
  • Maintain award/loss percentage log.
  • Amend bids based on bid reviews, addenda, and post-bid ASI’s (etc.).
  • Assist Project Managers and Office Managers in creating budgets for awarded projects.
  • Learn and utilize DSW’s limitations and capacity during the take-off process.
  • Assist in providing cost vs. estimates and review with comments for each completed project.


Education and Experience:

  • Degree in higher education in a construction-related field, preferred but not required.
  • Previous work experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (primarily Word and Excel).


Qualifications:

  • Must work well in a team and independently.
  • Possess excellent communication skills.
  • Capacity to think outside the box.
  • Ability to communicate both face-to-face and in writing.
  • Efficiently manage stressful situations.
  • Physical abilities would be 80% sitting, 10% standing, and 10% walking.
  • May be required to move miscellaneous materials up 30 lbs occasionally.
